Students competing in this year’s Chinese Bridge Competition will deliver speeches in Chinese and present performances of traditional Chinese art forms. Competition judges will be drawn only from organizations with no connection to students participating in this year’s competition.
Using the performed culture pedagogy developed by Prof. Galal Walker at The Ohio State University, OSU Chinese instructors have trained students and encouraged them to participate in Chinese Bridge competitions since 2004. OSU contestants have compiled a world record of 24 wins in regional and international competitions and have received generous scholarships from the Chinese Ministry of Education to study in the best universities in China. OSU contestants captured first-prize honors in Chinese Bridge finals competition in China in 2004 (Patrick McAloon), 2006 (Abigail Southerland) and 2007 (Joshua Lotz). Other OSU contestants in finals competitions have won two second prize awards and three third prize awards, one “best performance” and one “most popular” honors. OSU’s unparalleled winning record is a tribute to Dr. Walker’s performed culture pedagogy and tireless preparation by OSU’s contestants and their coaches.
